Kate Walsh Slams Bristol Palin Abstinence Push
In response to student protests regarding a speaking engagement by Bristol Palin at the Washington University in St. Louis, “Private Practice” star Kate Walsh showed her support to the students.
The fracas began when Palin, daughter of former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, was to be paid $20,000 to appear and take part in a discussion about abstinence. Students felt the sum was too much and then staged protests to cancel the event.
Their efforts worked and now TV star Walsh has chimed in with support.
The college’s Advisory Committee president, one Scott Elmann is said to have stated that the final decision to cancel the Palin event was “100 percent mutual” between both parties.
According to Elman he was disappointed that such an event was canceled.
It was the news of Palin’s speech about sexual abstinence that caught the attention of Kate Walsh and it was via the popular Twitter network that she chimed in with her displeasure of the news of the event.
Walsh’s Tweet expressed her views and added to the student’s momentum to have the event canceled. The actress wrote:
Welcome to the Idiocracy! RT @elliekirsh: @katewalsh please join students at Wash.U. to boycott Bristol Palin’s speech on abstinence. What does she know about college or abstaining?
Category: Celebrity

Go to FACEBOOK now.type in search “BOYCOTT KATE WALSH” join & boycott “private practice” & anything, everything kate walsh stands for.enough of this liberal BS
I’m an independent, my wife calls me a Republican but whatever. They thing that drives my nuts about hard right wingers is they will support any fellow conservative blindly. This isn’t about Kate Walsh but that’s what you’re making it about. This is about Bristol Palin and her speech being canceled at a college campus. Bristol Palin really has no business speaking about abstinence to college students. She knows what it means to make bad choices early in life but she knows absolutely nothing about college life. Go ahead and boycott everything Kate Walsh does but that isn’t going to help get Sarah Palin elected. And, FWIW, be careful what you wish for…
DJ- It is a common practive in this society for those who have made mistakes to publicly speak about a mistake and offer what he or she could have done differently. Bristol Palin is no different. What I don’t understand is why it is so important to silence someone. On a college campus no less! I consider this one of the biggest threats to our society.
It is one thing to simply speak….it is quite another to be paid $20,000 to speak about something you know nothing about. She wasn’t censored….she was fired. It would be like paying Elizabeth Taylor talk about how to have a successful marriage.
Righties, drop the “silencing” and “censoring” crap.
The students have the right to express their disapproval to pay $20,000 in their names to a person they don’t think is qualified in the topic.
The endless Right Wing Victim-hood…
LOL…True, too!
Maybe the price was steep, but why in the world does anyone need to know about college life in order to preach abstinence? I have been to college and I don’t know any more about college life than I imagined it to be before I experienced it. She presents a point of view; any respectable institution should be open to diverse points of view.
And they are… just not for $20k of the student’s money. Surely even you can think of a better way to spend that can’t you? Maybe ask glenn beck to come and talk to them about the historical impact of gerbils and how they are a bane to society due to their socialistic/communist lifestyle… Oh wait, he would never do that for a measely $20k.
Because Bristol Palin is a hypocrite.
Bristol Palin was going to speak about absinance. She didn’t abstain, and it seems to really have worked out well for her. Speaking engagements for which she is paid $20,000, $100,000 from People for baby pictures, who knows how much to say she and Levi are engaged, then breaking it off a week later. Teenage whoring seems to have paid off really well.
I don’t watch much TV, but I’ll be sure to watch “Private Practice” because Walsh is right. What does Bristol Palin know about abstinence or college?
I am with Kate Walsh and the STudents.
Bristol Palin is the last person in the world I would want to listen too about abstinence.
So typical Republican, do one thing and preach an other.
kareen, so don’t listen!!!!!!! I will never watch a thing kate Walsh is in ever! As Dee says Kate Walsh hops from one bed to another in her tv show. Such a wonderful representation of HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!
Or republicants in general… you know like newt gingrich for example?
wow, you are a wacky-doo
That’s fiction, though. Bristol Palin hopped into bed with what’s his face for real.
excuse me, Kate is an actress playing a roll, Bristol Palin’s vow of abstinence was a joke and she broke that vow and had a baby, not a stand-in or a stunt man.
YOu mean like Bristol Palin hops from one guy to another? First Levi, then Ben, now this Gino guy? They’re playing house, first in AK, now in AZ. She’s not even abstinent!
Yes, all of you boycott Kate Walsh now please and that terrible show of hers also. All of this coming from the person whose character sleeps with everyone on her show. Nice Kate, lets show the teenagers what they can do now. STUPID! Also, I believe the $20,000 was intended for all of the speakers that day not just Bristol Palin. Get your facts right folks or better yet, do not get on and reply if you cannot say something positive and decent about people. Oh, sorry that would actually mean that you would have to be nice to “your brother”. I guess that is definitely not happening in America right now, and has not been for the past 2 years.
oh, say something nice like you just did?! NOT!!
Say something nice? Are you kidding me? Republican = HATE, WAR, GUNS, BIGOTRY. Let’s all be nice, like Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck …..oh, and of course Sarah Palin! Look in the mirror! YOU be nice.
You are right the $20,000 was for all of the panelist. What you should add is all of the other panelist fee combined was less than $1,000 so Ms Palin would have received about $19,000. That is so much more reasonable.
Tell ya what, you pay me $20000 and I’ll ‘be nice’ too.
You right wing goons have debased our national discourse with so much ignorant crap, you have a lot of damn gall to criticize anybody for anything, particularly for things said that you think may be “mean”. You idiots are running around with guns and killing innocent church goers, cops and doctors, assassinating them really, and you want US to be nice?!?!?!? You are really asking for it, BTW. Guess what? Liberals have guns too. Try me.
Lee88, shut up. America is already in a sorry state, and yet you wish to cause even more turmoil with your beliefs. Unpatriotic.
Boycott causes turmoil? Contributes to sorry state of America? Unpatriotic? Get a grip. On second thought, get a history lesson. I am all for boycotting someone who misuses her elevated public position to undermine the core American value of free speech.
Except that this has nothing to do with ‘free’ speech.
Or is $20k free in your world? Nothing was stopping bristol from preaching her nonsense in the college cafeteria for free.
Freedom of speech does not apply to a University dropping a speaking contract with Bristol Palin. Freedom of Speech refers to a person or entity’s right to express themselves without fear of GOVERNMENT censorship or repression. I’ve heard this argument so much lately, particularly from the right. For instance, Glenn Beck fans were all up in arms when people opposed to his show started a boycott with advertisers. They claimed this was an infringement upon Glenn’s freedom of speech.
Ya know, for self-proclaimed Constitution experts, the Tea Partiers and those on the right really have no clue about Constitutional law. Wash U pulling Bristol Palin’s appearance isn’t a violation of Freedom of Speech, it’s an act of Free Enterprise. They are a private entity, and can do whatever they’d like to with their speaker budget/schedule.
Oh, and for the record, Bristol Palin could probably give two shits less about abstinence education, considering she was opposed to it when her mother was pushing it. She, like her mother, is just trying to cash in on the family’s new found fame. There’s nothing to admire about her or her family.
I agree Boycott all that Kate Walsh is involved with. She just proved that Hollywood is ignorant. I would think that Planned Parenthood would embrace Bristol Palin’s message. Then they could devote funds that are used to “correct mistakes” on more worthy programs. But, apparently Kate Walsh is too blinded by politics to use common sense.
I smell the desperation of an aging actress needing some attention…Does anyone else? She did this for her own self promotion…Not for any cause! Shame on Her!
you are one to talk about “too blinded by politics”…have you actually given thought to what kate said…did she lie?! has bristol gone to college? has she abstained? what is so wrong with wanting someone to “walk the walk” not just preach it!?
You really don’t think there is likely an actual student at that college that is dealing with the consequences of not abstaining AND dealing with going to school that could use that $20k WAY more than bristol could?
How any mothers in their early twenties can afford to pay cash for a house?
Booo for Kate Walsh….not watching your show ever again! Shame on you!
I’m sure you’ll be missed.
Did anyone even read this article? The decision to cancel the Palin event was 100% MUTUAL! Do you really think the cancellation was based on Kate Walsh’s opinion? She didn’t cancel the event – the school AND Palin together canceled it.
Walsh has just as much right to speak her mind as Palin does.
Ouch. Bristol is an authority on what can go wrong with no birth control, she is not her mother, and it would have been interesting to hear from her.
As for Kate Walsh I imagine we will not be seeing her on any talk shows in the future on the subjects of being an actress, which she struggles with, or being able to stay married longer than 20 minutes!
The remark about Bristol and college was a low blow.
I am from Canada and always amazed how the American women blame men for treating them so badly, but as a woman Kate did a pretty good job of trashing Bristol!
In what universe does bristol have $20k worth of knowledge to impart?
I’m quite certain I could speak just as knowledgeably about it for that much money. At least I’ve gone to college and had children.
Its not because she got pregnant as a teen that she has nothing to say about the dangers of teen pregnancy, but because it was so wildly successful for her. How does she honestly tell girls how it will ruin their lives when she is getting paid $20,000 to speak for a few hours, all because she got pregnant as a teen? Perhaps there are a few morons like yourself who think there is some value in what she has to say, but unless she is talking about how to turn your mistakes into well paid speaking fees most people are going to realize she is talking about something she knows nothing about.
Paleeze….when even Joy Behar on the View and all of the other hosts agree with Elizabeth that this is something that is great for the kids to see….who better than someone who has done the crime and is paying the time…..she has given up her youth and is raising her son. She isn’t asking fo a government handout….she is trying to do the right thing…….SHAME ON THE UNIVERSITY FOR BEING COWARDS. I thought liberals preached “free speech”…..oh that is only if they are preaching at ya!
It is not FREE speech when you are getting PAID $20,000 to speak! She is not a EXPERT just because she got pregnant without being married! If she offered to speak without being paid, I would be all for it – that would be FREE speech.
She can come onto campus, grab a curb, and speak anytime she wants to. Her right to do that is not in question. She does not have the RIGHT to get paid 20k to get in front of a large audience and extol the virtues of the Abstinence Pledge that she so willfully broke (and is now getting paid to endorse by the Conservative establishment).
$20,000 to pay someone to talk about abstinence? Please. Why don’t we put that money into a safe sex program that may actually help students. Abstinence does not work. It promotes marraige at a young age, pregnancy and the spread of STDs.
Be quiet Kate.. What do you know about decency and morality. You are just another dumb moron from Hollywood and your show has become just another stupid vehicle to slam immorality and indecency down everyone’s throat. Go Bristol. I do think the fee was a bit steep though.
I don’t know much about Bristol Palin, but I know that she’s no expert on abstinence. The college’s money would be better spent on a few scholarships for students who need the money or prospective students who need the money.
The fact that she did not remain abstinent is exactly why she CAN speak out on it! Be real, its our mistakes that we learn the most from, or, if we would allow it, the mistakes of others. Colleges are traditionally liberal and everyone goes crazy when they get away from home. While it is human nature it is also another reason for people like Bristol TO speak up.
Ummmmm bristol can’t preach abstinence.
She can try-theres nothing wrong with that. She can say she made a mistake in dealing with a guy-who is no more an adult then she believed at that time.
She can say “when the lights go out-make sure that u have a condom”-oh wait.
But this “n planned parenthood would back me” meme is a joke.
Planned parenthood believes in preventive birth control methods other then abstinence. Why would they want ally themselves with an individual who isn’t fond of that group’s mandate?
Now lila rose….she’s a perfect allie for bristol (and she’s intelligent too) (/snark).
She’s already done a commercial with the Situation. He came off smarter because he had a pack of condoms. She can certainly speak about making bad choices. Abstinence only was the bad choice. How can she possibly preach that abstinence works when she got pregnant? It’s does not qualify her, it disqualifies her.
So every teenage girl who gets pregnant deserves to be paid $20,000 to tell other girls not to get pregnant?
But not for $20k. Be real there is NOTHING she could say that would be worth that much.
Why should Bristol be paid for something like this ? There are millions of teenage mothers in the United States, many with multiple children. I’m sure there are some at the college that would be willing to speak on the subject. Not wanting to pay money to a celebrity (what has she done) when the money could be better used is not stifling her views.
Tammy, if you wanna hear Bristol speak, then YOU pay her $20k. I wouldn’t, and these students don’t want to either apparently. It’s their money.
Why not pay some homeless people $20,000 a pop to give lectures on home ownership and mortgage management? Same for Bernie Madoff on business ethics or Dick Cheney on how not to be a dick.
Some people do learn from their mistakes and are worth listening to. Some, like the Palins, are just pathetic losers.
The wrong Alaskan politician was on that plan last August 9.
What does she know about college or abstaining?
Well, the left having succeeded once more in silencing a view they don’t expect to like, we’ll never know.

Spare us your ridiculous martyr complex. First, Ms. Palin has not been “silenced”. She is still perfectly able to speak up. Second, we do know perfectly well about her ignorant views regarding abstinence, because she *has* been speaking up. She’s all “sex for me and not for thee; don’t do what you know I’m still doing.”
You right wingers need to get over yourselves. All it takes is a couple of us liberals practicing our first amendment right to call you out on your lies and nonsense to have the lot of you screaming about being censored.
No-one silenced her. She could have spewed her nonsense for free probably anywhere on the college campus she liked. Kinda like you do here.
We’ll never know?!!! The woman and her mother will not shut up. We already know too much about them.
you failed to mention what she knows about College or Abstaining. She isn’t, to the best of my knowledge, a college student. I’ll grant that she can speak to the results of being a hypocrite though.
The issue here is not that Bristol Palin wanted to go to a campus and speak about her pregnancy. It’s about paying someone with no apparently expertise in college life or reproductive issues (aside from that she had sex with someone) getting paid an enormous amount of money to provide some expertise on the subject. It’s serious business because every educational system across this nation is in terrible economic straights. I retain many friends in the State University where I used to work and they haven’t had a pay raise for 3 years. Tuition has skyrocketed over the past decade, particularly over the past few years.
This is an issue about a bad judgement call on the part of the university to squander vital funds. This is about wing-nut welfare, not about free speech. No one is preventing Brisol Palin from telling kids to deny their urges. This about saying, we won’t pay you $20,000 for an hours work.
It’s about saying no to another ideological grifter.
Bristol Palin is a liar and a con artist. Abstinence did not work for Bristol Palin. But Bristol Palin still accepts money to promote abstinence. There are a bunch of stupid people on this thread who attack Kate Walsh for speaking the truth, and defending Bristol Palin for spreading lies. I wonder where all of these idiots come from. there isn’t a single person on my street who is so stupid. Wake up, you fricken idiots. Bristol Palin is selling you a defective product. Bristol Palin’s own life experience should teach you that
I just don’t get what on earth Zee Le Wingnuts are griping about. with this…?
Don’t you guys (always, guys) constantly harp on Saving Money by cutting Wasteful Gov’t Spending? (And if the Palinistas don’t offer as poignant an example of “wasteful” as one could ever hope for…. Well, yikes!)
Seriously? $20 Grand for a truly maudlin Speech?
C’mon – Get your Conservative Roots, already !
Sincerely, The Progressive Majority
Really? Boycott Kate? Boycott everything Palin. Bristol Palin speaking about abstinence is like Charlie Sheen speaking about on “Just say say No” Bristol Palin, if she were honest, (Something that does not seem to run in the family) Would speak in favor of condom use. I though conservatives were for family values. The Palins don’t have them. Even Todd can’t keep it in his pants. The Palin’s make the Clintons look like puritans.
Bring on the Republican primaries, a circus with no animals, just clowns.
sorry…they came…oops
Giving Bristol Palin $20,000 to preach abstinence to college students would have been a huge waste, the students absolutely had a right to protest such a horrible use of their tuition money. And there are other ways to avoid an unwanted pregnancy besides abstinence. I don’t know who Kate Walsh is or how she came to be involved in this, nor do I care. Anyone crying censorship understands the first amendment about as well as Bristol’s dimwit mother.
damn – with all you right wing nuts complaining about ‘free speech,’ where were you when your beloved shrub established ‘free speech’ zones in order to silence free speech? talk about ‘animal farm…’
this isnt about kate walsh. its about a numb nut little beeotch saying do as i say, not as i do. what a crock!
Nice to see the wing nut trolls are active tonight!
In other news; Washington Students see better use for their money that to give it to those who are to stupid to use a free condom.
Abstinence only education is as useless as can be! teach it with safe sex and at least it’s worth a chuckle .
Let’s be honest, the Palins are nothing more than money hungry opportunist. If Bristol really want to do some good, why not visit High Schools, community centers or middle schools and crusade her cause for per diem. Why colleges for 20 grand, the Palins ain’t nothing but a business, that is why momma attempted to trade mark hers and Bristol’s name, got to protect the brand.
These religious folks and their boycotts, a junior high mentality. Can’t believe how they’re always looking for something to boycott. Gives them a sense of purpose, I guess. They need to get a life.
The decision was made by the college and Bristol. I’m figuring they realized no one was going to come, and wouldn’t recoup their speaker fees.
All Kate Walsh did was give her opinion via twitter.
Non-story made into a religious talking point.
I would think Wash U. could find an unwed single mother to speak on their campus for a lot less money than that. Certainly closer to home than Alaska. And certainly someone who could use the money more than the millionaire Palins. Just a thought.
The college should hire someone who has really lived the life of a teenage mom. Some girl who got pregnant at 16, was kick out of the house by her religious nutball father and is now living in a slum tenement apartment and is working the midnight shift at the local cafe mopping up puke in the men’s room. That would do more for college kids than hearing from a millionaire’s daughter on how tough her life is …ya know with dancing on tv and all.
“Also, I believe the $20,000 was intended for all of the speakers that day not just Bristol Palin” Interesting, as I actually looked to see if I could verify that. It’s not true, her fee was $20,000.
Is it safe to assume Kate Walsh’s salary per show doesn’t offend the WU students., right?
I think it’s safe to say the University student’s tuition doesn’t pay her TV salary. I would agree with you, they probably don’t give a rat’s ass about her salary.
BTW.. to be fair, tuition is only a part of the operating budget of a University. The majority would come from the endowments, donations, and Grant overhead (most of the grants probably coming from your taxes).
How do you feel about using your Tax Money to pay Brisol Palin 20K to talk for an hour about how she got herself knocked up.. and how the best way to prevent that is to stress the least successful form of preventative education.
Ah.. WingNut Welfare. Got to love it.
Nice try.
I think it’s hilarious that conservatives are trying to slutshame Walsh by pointing out things that her FICTIONAL CHARACTER does. Woo-ha, women-haters!
And undermining the core American value of free speech? LOL. This is a university campus. That $20,000 wasn’t going to appear out of thin air– It would’ve been taken from the students’ pockets. And those students protested the way they’re money was going to be spent. Makes 100% sense.

I have little confidence that the opinions expressed here were driven by people with skin in the game but neither do I. However if you believe that boycotting a TV show is sticking it to the liberal you should maybe have a look see at your real life. If you think and practice abstinence as an effective means to prevent unwanted pregnancies, well your being punished enough.
“The college’s Advisory Committee president, one Scott Elmann is said to have stated that the final decision to cancel the Palin event was “100 percent mutual” between both parties.”
To everyone complaining about Bristol being censored or fired what part of the statement above do you not understand?
