NASA Press Conference Today: Arsenic-based Life Discovered
Although there has been plenty of speculation lately that NASA was on the edge of revealing that they had found extraterrestrial life, it seems that a new discovery that was made on earth has almost overtaken that announcement. A team of scientists recently revealed that they had found a type of bacteria that was able to resist arsenic, the deadliest element on earth.
In fact, the organism was not only able to survive the element, it used it as a backbone of its DNA. For many researchers, including those NASA scientists, this new discovery is extremely noteworthy. “I find this result delightful. It makes me expand my notion of what life in the universe would need to sustain itself,” said Pamela Conrad, an astrobiologist for the Goddard Space Flight Center belonging to NASA.
Conrad wasn’t involved in the research, but was highly pleased with the discovery.
Felisa Wolfe-Simon is the biochemist who happened to identify the creature and its resistance to arsenic. Wolfe-Simon said of the discovery, “The mere fact that an organism can grow with this much arsenic, that’s outrageous.” It was previously supposed that all life relied on six elements—carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sufur, and phosphorus. However, this organism can replace phosphorus with arsenic and survive.
